Modern Monsters
Entry updated 4 April 2017. Tagged: Publication.
Letter-size saddle-stapled Cinema magazine printed on newsprint-quality paper. Publisher: Prestige Publications. Four bimonthly issues, April 1966 to October/November 1966. Editors: Gunther Collins and Donald F Glut (uncredited).
A good-quality magazine which tried to imitate Famous Monsters of Filmland, although with a slightly more mature slant. Modern Monsters ran the usual material on current and past genre films, as well as James Bond and Batman. Some short Horror fiction also appeared. A poster was bound into each issue: as so often with such publications, the poster is frequently missing from surviving copies.
Prestige Publications also printed a 1966 Halloween calendar with each month featuring masks of various Monsters from the Don Post Studios; this is now a sought-after collector's item. Don Post (1902-1979) and studio co-owner Verne Langdon (1941-2011) produced masks and items for various films and Television programmes for a number of years, as well as selling them to the general public.
