(1937-2014) US author whose first Young Adult tale, Brainstorm (1977 chap), set in the distant Near Future about a century hence, shows Earth's military attempting to solve the problem of a Ray targeted by Aliens at human populations, causing insanity. Some of his later work – much of it set in Harlem – is Fantasy, including the Paranoia-inducing Shadow of the Red Moon (1995); he is also known for contemporary young-adult fiction with teenage African-American protagonists. Two of his nonfantastic works were listed as Honor Books (runners-up) in Newbery Medal results, 1989 and 1993. [JC]
