Nix, Garth
Entry updated 19 October 2026. Tagged: Author.
(1963- ) Australian author, almost exclusively of Young Adult fantasies, who began to publish work of genre interest with "Down to the Scum Quarter: A Farcical Fantasy Solo Adventure" in Myths and Legends for 1987. Most of his work, which has received considerable praise, lies beyond the remit of this encyclopedia (and is not listed below), though at least one of his several series, the short Imperial Galaxy sequence beginning with A Confusion of Princes (2012), is a Space Opera adventure. A short story,"Master Haddad's Holiday", is added to at least one iteration of the novel.
Nix is of greatest sf interest for Massif (2026), his first adult work in the genre, set in the distant Near Future when a "massif" – a mountain peak transformed by Alien science into a starfaring Macrostructure (see also World Ship) – is created on Earth, and welcomes visitors. Each massif turns out to be part of a vast interstellar Transportation and Communication network. Typical of the race, Homo sapiens's spread into the home galaxy is rife with Colonization of Other Worlds and incessant War. At least one sequel is anticipated, whose task in part it may be to explain why we were allowed out. [JC]
further awards or honours: Ditmar Award.
