(? - ) US reviewer, editor and co-owner 1977-1994 of the Californian sf bookshop The Other Change of Hobbit; active in Fandom since the 1970s, her Fanzine being Kith (3 issues 1984-1985); involved with the US Feminist Convention WisCon and the James Tiptree Jr Award as a member of its "Motherboard"; she has also written as Deborah L Notkin and D L Notkin. She reviewed sf and fantasy for Delap's F & SF Review 1975-1976, for Rigel 1981-1983, and for Locus 1982-1987.
Notkin's first Anthology was The Outer Limits: Volume One (anth 1996) with Roger Stewart, comprising stories adapted from episodes of The Outer Limits plus one reprint – Harlan Ellison's "Soldier" (October 1957 Fantastic Universe as "Soldier from Tomorrow"; vt in From the Land of Fear coll 1967) – which became a well-known episode; this pattern was repeated in two further volumes [see Checklist below]. The standalone Flying Cups and Saucers: Gender Explorations in Science Fiction and Fantasy (anth 1998) is a selection of tales nominated for the James Tiptree Jr Award, prefaced by Notkin's essay "Why Have a Tiptree Award?"; later came the James Tiptree Award Anthologies beginning with The James Tiptree Award Anthology 1: Sex, The Future, & Chocolate Chip Cookies (anth 2005) edited with Karen Joy Fowler, Pat Murphy and Jeffrey D Smith. 80!: Memories & Reflections on Ursula K Le Guin (anth 2010) with Karen Joy Fowler is an eightieth-birthday tribute to Ursula K Le Guin.
