Nowa Fantastyka Award
Entry updated 19 January 2026. Tagged: Award.
Polish juried Award for the best authors and works of Fantastika published in Polish in the preceding calendar year, established in 2014 by the editors of Nowa Fantastyka. Over time, the award expanded from two to six categories, covering both Polish and translated works, as well as comics and authors.
From 2014 to 2019 the Award had two categories; as of 2025 that number has increased to six. From 2014 to the present the Reflektor ["Spotlight"] award has been presented to the best author; from 2019 this was renamed as the Maciej Parowski Award. The Book of the Year award was presented from 2014 to 2018; from 2019 this was split into Polish Book of the Year and Foreign Book of the Year. 2019 also introduced Reissue of the Year and Comic of the Year, the latter split from 2020 into Polish Comic of the Year and Foreign Comic of the Year.
In the Book and Comic of the Year categories, eligible works include all Fantastika titles published for the first time in Poland in the previous year, with the book category also being open for fantastika-related nonfiction works. Reissue of the Year is open to both books and comics, and highlights a classic work of fantastika that has received a new edition in Poland in the previous year. The Maciej Parowski Award recognizes authors who, in the jury's opinion, deserve readers' attention because "they have not yet gained notoriety and widespread recognition, but have the potential to achieve greatness in the future".
Depending on the year, between two and two dozen works have been nominated in a single category. The nominations and awards are decided by the Award Jury, composed of the publicly announced group of editors of Nowa Fantastyka, that magazine's collaborators, and invited "fantastika industry experts" (the jury composition can differ for different categories). This reflects the magazine's image of an elite forum: historically, Fantastyka has distanced itself from the concept of mass voting by members of Fandom.
Being open to both Polish and foreign works, the Nowa Fantastyka Awards continue the tradition of the Sfinks Award (presented from 1995 to 2015), though with no categories for short stories; they recognize the Comics medium instead. This also avoids the potential conflict of interest faced by the magazine-owned Sfinks Award and Nautilus Award, sidestepping any discussion on whether Nowa Fantastyka is biased in favour of works published in its pages. Polish short stories are currently recognized by the Janusz A Zajdel Award. [PKo]
