Entry updated 16 March 2026. Tagged: Author, Critic, Fan.

(1926-1983) US fan and bibliographer, active in Fandom from the early 1940s; a founder in 1947 of the Washington (DC) Science Fiction Association. APAs or amateur press associations to which he belonged included FAPA, where he contributed the Fanzines Bobolings (1950-1982) and Contour (1950-1957; also in OMPA), and SAPS. His first Bibliography of note was the monumental Fanzine Index: Listing Most Fanzines from the Beginning through 1952, including Titles, Editors' Names, and Data on Each Issue (five issues in FAPA 1952-1959; 1965) with Bill Evans, based on and much extending the earlier S.F. Checklist by R D and F N Swisher (eight issues in FAPA 1938-1942; not collected as a single volume) usually known as the Swisher Index. Another substantial effort was FAPA Book (six issues in FAPA 1972-1978, not collected as a single volume), which catalogued and commented on the first 96 FAPA mailings from 1937 to 1961 [see under links below].
