Pseudonym of US artist, sf fan, editor, journalist and author Doris Marie Claire Baumgardt (1920-1970), married to Frederik Pohl (1940-1944) and to Richard Wilson (1951-1965), associated with sf Fandom and Fanzines from the mid-1930s; a member of the Futurians from around 1938. As an illustrator (see Illustration) in the early 1940s, she tastefully but to no great degree sophisticated the subject matter and rendering skills of the fan artist of the time, long before the airbrush eliminated the need for undue competence. She began publishing work of genre interest with "Space Episode" in Future Fiction for December 1941. Under the Skin (June 1956 Infinity; 2022 ebook) robustly intermixes Identity issues, interspecies Sex and Imperialism in a tale revolving around a mining Disaster on Mars. [JC]
