Rip Hunter, Time Master
Entry updated 9 December 2024. Tagged: Character, Comics, Publication.
A DC Comics Superhero, created by Jack Miller and Ruben Moreira in 1959; after appearances in Showcase, he graduated to his own title, which lasted from 1961 to 1965. He is a Scientist who invents a time-traveling vehicle, the Time Sphere (see Time Travel), and with three colleagues – Jeff Smith, Bonnie Baxter, and Corky Baxter – he made regular journeys through time, sometimes into the future but mostly into the past, his team obviously inspired by the success of a similar group without superpowers, Challengers of the Unknown. His adventures in the past normally avoided the standard destinations for time travellers, though he did meet with historical figures like Cleopatra (see Ancient Egypt in SF) and George Washington, and of course repeatedly had encounters with Dinosaurs and Aliens; one story featured the revelation that the ancient Greek gods (see Gods and Demons; Mythology) were actually visiting humanoid aliens.
After the end of his own comic, Rip Hunter appeared in the stories of other DC characters and was part of a team, the Forgotten Heroes, bringing together other heroes who had long ago vanished from the pages of DC comics. In DC's typical treatment of less prominent figures, he has recently been reinvented in various fashions, and he was one of the protagonists of the Television series Legends of Tomorrow (2016-2022) along with other DC superheroes, though he was written out of the series in the third season.
