(? - ) UK fan and editor whose Canterbury-based Fanzine Titan (4 issues, December 1975-October 1976) metamorphosed into Arena SF (9 issues numbered #5-#13, February 1977-? 1982), an ambitious A5-format magazine of sf criticism and commentary with something of the flavour of an Academic Journal. Contributors included Brian W Aldiss, John Brunner, David Langford, Brian Stableford, George Turner, Ian Watson, Kate Wilhelm and David Wingrove; there were interviews with Barrington J Bayley, Brunner, Richard Cowper, Robert P Holdstock, Robert Sheckley and Kurt Vonnegut. Arena SF was latterly supported by a grant from UK South East Arts, whose termination forced it to cease publication. Rippington then edited the British Science Fiction Association magazine Vector from issue #108 (June 1982) to #123 (December 1984), including occasional returns of Ian Watson's Arena SF column "Into the Arena".
Under the auspices of the BSFA, Rippington co-edited two slim but useful critical anthologies with Paul Kincaid: British Science Fiction Writers, Volume One: Bob Shaw (anth 1981 chap) and British Science Fiction Writers, Volume Two: Keith Roberts (anth 1983 chap). [DRL]
