(1972- ) Pakistani journalist and author, active from before 2000, mostly in US since early adulthood; the stores assembled in her first collection, Animal Medicine (coll 2000), are nonfantastic, as are her earlier novels. She is of sf interest for the Before She Sleeps sequence beginning with Before She Sleeps (2018), set in a Near Future Dystopian South West Asia, where a government, based in the class-ridden capitol Green City (see Cities), attempts to recuperate from War and Disasters through a restoration of gender balance enacted in terms clearly evocative of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale (1985) (see Feminism; Sex). A direct sequel, The Monsoon War (2023), focuses on the jungle hinterlands where armed resistance to the tyranny offers some hope for change. [JC]
