(1946-2012) US author, folklorist and anthologist who began to publish work of genre interest with "The Shrouded Sorceress" in Space and Time for April 1981. Most of her output is Fantasy, including her first solo book Golden Girl and the Crystal of Doom (1986 chap), set in the children's Shared World of Golden Girl and the Guardians of the Gemstones (with an accompanying line of Toys), and her first full-length novel The Shining Falcon (1989), which won the 1990 Compton Crook/Stephen Tall Memorial Award. Of direct sf interest is the Transformers Tie The Invisibility Factor (1986 chap). Sherman also wrote a number of competent novel ties to the original series of Star Trek (1966-1969), always in collaboration with Susan Shwartz, beginning with Star Trek: Vulcan's Forge (1997) [see Checklist below]. A further sf tie is Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda: Through the Looking Glass (2005) (see Andromeda).

Sherman's anthology Once Upon a Galaxy (anth 1994) assembles folktales and myths presumed to underlie such modern legends as Superman, Star Trek, Star Wars and J R R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955 3vols). [DRL]
