Shore, Howard

(1946- ) Canadian composer, best known for his film scores including The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003) trilogy, The Hobbit (2012-2014) trilogy and a dozen collaborations with David Cronenberg. His opera The Fly (2008), with a libretto by Davis Henry Hwang, is fairly loosely based on the film The Fly (1986), directed by Cronenberg, for which Shore had written the score. The music for the opera is in a recognizably Hollywood style, similar to the rich orchestrations which some critics find anomalous in Cronenberg's films. [CWa]
