(?   -    ) US author, much of whose work has been Space Opera, including her first series, the Young Adult Abyss sequence beginning with The Abyss Surrounds Us (2016), set in a moderately distant Near Future where the "NeoPacific" houses various Genetically Engineered species. The protagonist represents the Reckoners, a group designed to keep the world in check. Skrutskie's second series, the Bloodright Trilogy beginning with Bonds of Brass (2020), takes place in a dynasty-obsessed Galactic Empire; in a manner echoing the dynamics of the first series, various protagonists become involved in same-sex engagements that mirror and fruitfully expose the workings of the empire.

The protagonist of Hullmetal Girls (2018), having volunteered to become a Memory-Edited Android soldier, must uncover with her new friend the secrets underlying the nest of abandoned Starships she inhabits, and also her lost Memories. The Salvation Gambit (2023) thrusts its female hacker protagonist through a caper-like plot as, with the help of some friends with whom she is erotically involved, she unravels the secrets of an AI-driven Starship used as a Prison. Skrutskie's re-inhabitation of the Space Opera toolkit (see SF Megatext) is energetic. [JC]
