(1935-1994) US journalist, author, editor and fan with a particular interest in Comics; among the founding members of US comics Fandom. His Fanzines included Comic Art (7 issues 1961-1968) with Maggie Curtis, who became his wife Maggie Thompson in June 1962, and Newfangles (54 issues 1967-1971) with Maggie Thompson, a Newszine for comics fandom. Thompson also published a handful of sf stories beginning with "The Telenizer" for Galaxy in March 1954, but is best remembered for comics-related work, including his co-editorship of two Anthologies of essays on comics. All in Color for a Dime (1970) with Richard A Lupoff as Dick Lupoff, assembles material published in Xero (which see); contributors included Harlan Ellison, Ron Goulart and Ted White. The Comic-Book Book (1973; exp 1998) was again co-edited with Lupoff. With Maggie Thompson he published The Official Price Guide to Science Fiction and Fantasy Collectibles, Third Edition (1989). From 1972 the Thompsons contributed a column titled "Beautiful Balloons" to The Buyer's Guide for Comic Fandom; when this journal was acquired by Krause Publications in 1983 and retitled Comics Buyer's Guide they became joint editors. After her husband's death in 1994 Maggie Thompson continued as solo editor and later Senior Editor until the magazine was cancelled at issue #1699 dated March 2013. [DRL]
