Thompson, Mary G

Entry updated 10 February 2025. Tagged: Author.

(1978-    ) US lawyer, law librarian and author, the first of her Young Adult works being Wuftoom (2012), a horror tale where metamorphosis into the worm-like eponym stands in for the young protagonist's coming of age. The young protagonist of Escape from the Pipe Men! (2013) has grown up in an Extraterrestrial Zoo, which he escapes to engage in Space Opera adventures in his quest for an antidote to the Poison that is killing his father. Amy Chelsea Stacie Dee (2016) and The Word (2024) are nonfantastic. Flicker and Mist (2017) is a fantasy set in a world where becoming Invisible is a common skill.

Thompson is of sf interest for One Level Down (2025), set in a matryoshka world of multiply encircling Virtual Realities [for Arabian Nightmare see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below], at the heart of which the Villain of the tale, a self-declared Mad Scientist, exercises obsessional control over his middle-aged daughter by imprisoning her in a five year old's body (see Prison). Nothing is "real": but nothing can be escaped. This is, the tale seems to imply, just like the universe as a whole. [JC]
