(? -? ) New Zealand author who should not be confused with the Catalan composer Josep Maria Torrens (1899-1986). His short Utopia, A Trip to Mars: "An Awful Venture": A Curious Message: Being a Copy of a Circular Addressed to the Inhabitants of this World, by Mr H(omo) V Mundo, the Late Visitor to the Planet Mars (in coll 1901), comprises the first section of the second edition of A Song of Auckland, and Other Verses (coll 1900). The protagonist, propelled by a gun with the aid of something like Antigravity through space to Mars, discovers a highly advanced civilization there whose inhabitants communicate by Telepathy, and whose adherence to the Golden Rule ensures that Technology does not dominate their lives. Airships are used to reach Mars's two moons, which are pleasure resorts. The presumed previous publication of this utopia in the Wellington AI and New Zealand Tit-Bits has not been traced. [JC]
