(1969- ) US screenwriter, producer, director and author, whose version of Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass (2007), which he directed and for which he wrote the screenplay, received some criticism for its softening of the author's iconoclastic take on Religion. Weitz is of specific sf interest for his Young World sequence comprising The Young World (2014), The New Order (2015) and The Revival (2016), a Young Adult series set in a Near Future New York after a medical Disaster has wiped out the entire population, except for teenagers. The young protagonists, attempting to research the plague, become involved with a Mad Scientist on a secret Island. Discovering that only America has been afflicted, and that the Old World is mounting an Invasion to eliminate anyone surviving in the afflicted continent, they attempt to transform Manhattan into an armed Keep. The usual contrast in this type of tale between the complexity of the adult world, and the implausible agency of teenage protagonists, is perhaps enhanced here. [JC]
