(1955- ) US author whose fiction has generally been nonfantastic; she began to publish work of genre interest with "The Succubus" in Embracing the Dark (anth 1991) edited by Eric Garber. Her sf novel, AfterShocks (1992), is set in Near Future San Francisco (see California), where the effects of a devastating earthquake (see Disaster) are played out against the ultimately resolved turmoils between two same-sex lovers (see Feminism; Women in SF). The Mandrake Broom (2007), which focuses on witch-burning in the Europe of 1465-1540, features a protagonist whose slow ageing is due to a potion (see Drugs; Immortality) provided by her mother. Jaguar Paloma and the Caketown Bar (2021), told in the myth-of-origin mode of a Magic Realist author like Gabriel García Márquez [see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below], creates a luxuriant world, at the heart of which a Utopian Zone called Caketown is created by Jaguar and her kith and kin.
Wells should not be confused with the musician Jess Wells (1953-2010). [JC]
