(1965- ) UK author whose six novels to date range across several genres, from detections to historicals, none of the first five with fantastic content; of sf interest is The Plague Times Trilogy beginning with A Lovely Way to Burn (2014). Disaster in the form of an extremely deadly Pandemic known as the Sweats strikes very-Near Future London, causing immense social chaos and hinting at Dystopian times to come. The continuing protagonists escape to the Orkney Islands, but after a few years must return briefly to the mainland, which is still in a state of balkanized disorder, to rescue the Island's children. Welsh has cited Terry Nation's Television series Survivors (1975-1977) as an influence. [JC]
