(1981- ) US author who began publishing work of genre interest with "The Boy, the Bomb, and the Witch Who Returned" in Ministry Protocol: Thrilling Tales of the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences (anth 2013) edited by Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris. Their first novel, Every Mountain Made Low (2016) – though its narrative focuses on a protagonist able to see the dead, who in turn see her and harm her – employs a perhaps more fruitful topos of modern Fantastika through the tale's setting, an Underground City constructed coral-like in the vast devastated innards an abandoned strip mine. Of more direct sf interest is their first series, the Salvagers sequence beginning with A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe (2018), an engagingly complex Space Opera whose several protagonists, some of them teamed, quest for an ancient Starship containing Weapons and other Technologies that might change the galaxy (see Time Abyss). Further volumes provide further not dissimilar challenges to the winning protagonists of the first tale, including a search for Homo sapiens's lost original home planet. In their second series, the Starmetal Symphony sequence beginning with August Kite and the Mechas from Space (2022), Weaponized Robots from outer space (not Mechas as the term is used in this encyclopedia) threaten Earth; but a dissident rump of the invaders recruits the human protagonist of the tale to fight back.
White has also written Ties for the Alien universe and the Star Trek universe (see checklist below). [JC]
