Wilbur, Crane

Entry updated 8 April 2024. Tagged: Author, Film, Theatre.

(1886-1973) US actor, screenwriter and director now perhaps best remembered for co-starring with Pearl White in the classic twenty-episode Serial Film The Perils of Pauline (1914), where he played Pauline's love interest Harry. His stage play The Monster (performed 1922), which he took on tour with himself in a star role in 1924, featured what were to become robust Clichés of Horror in SF (including the Mad Scientist whose sinister experiments require human guinea-pigs) and was the basis for the silent film The Monster (1925) directed by Roland West.

Wilbur also co-scripted the Jules Verne adaptation Mysterious Island (1961) directed by Cy Endfield. [DRL]
