(? - ) US author, critic and academic, a lecturer at the University of California, Riverside, who has been editor of speculative fiction coverage for the Los Angeles Review of Books and contributed a chapter ("Art and Illustration") to The Oxford Handbook of Science Fiction (anth 2014) edited by Rob Latham; he has also reviewed for the Science Fiction Research Association's SFRA Review. His first book-length critical work, reflecting his academic focus on the intersection of globalization with contemporary sf, was Science Fiction, New Space Opera, and Neoliberal Globalism: Nostalgia for Infinity (2016), the subtitle being the name of the Starship central to Alastair Reynolds's New-Space-Opera debut novel Revelation Space (2000). This was followed by Citizen Science Fiction (2021), which examines sf and its tropes – including Aliens, Clones, Galactic Empire, Robots and Upload – in the light of recent scientific advances and the significance of their contribution to present-day Future Studies concerns. Winter's third book was the detailed Ian McDonald study Building Bridges Between Cultures in Ian McDonald's Science Fiction (2025). [DRL]
