Wood, Edward

(1926-1996) US fan, bibliographer, collector and critic, active in Fandom from the mid-1940s. He edited the important early Fanzine about sf, The Journal of Science Fiction (4 issues Fall 1951-October 1953) with Charles Freudenthal and (first issue only) Lester Fried, an aspiring Academic Journal whose second issue (October 1952) was devoted wholly to Wood's bibliographical checklists of the SF Magazines of 1951. He reviewed sf for Science-Fiction Times (see Fantasy Times), Luna Monthly and – briefly in 1979 – Analog. With Earl Kemp and other members of the University of Chicago Science Fiction Club, Wood was a co-founder in 1956 of Advent: Publishers (which see). His magnum opus is perhaps the Advent meta-Bibliography SF Bibliographies: An Annotated Bibliography of Bibliographical Works on Science Fiction and Fantasy Fiction (1972 chap) with Robert E Briney, which very competently covers the early years of such publications though quirkily excluding relevant material published in magazines and fanzines.
Though often bylined as Ed Wood in fanzines and prozine letter columns, he should of course not be confused with the film-maker Edward D Wood Jr, also known as Ed Wood. [DRL]
