World Famous Creatures

Entry updated 4 April 2017. Tagged: Publication.

Small US Bedsheet-size saddle-stapled Cinema magazine printed on mid-grade newsprint paper. Four approximately bimonthly issues published by Magsyn Publications, October 1958 to February 1959. Editor: M Leon Howard.

One of the first competitors of Forrest J Ackerman's Famous Monsters of Filmland from Warren Publishing, this title was aimed at the same audience, which was just discovering the older Horror films and Monster Movies of the 1930s and 1940s thanks to Universal's "Shock Theater" package of films showing on Television. World Famous Creatures also covered such then-recent fare as I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957) and 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957), along with various actors including Bela Lugosi. The covers were quite well done, though uncredited; issue #1 was distributed in the UK with a slightly altered cover. The back covers of the first two issues each featured a cut-out monster mask, as result of which intact copies are now difficult to find today, placing them among the most costly of the early US monster-movie magazines – often fetching $100 or more for examples in top condition.
