X Minus One

Entry updated 4 April 2017. Tagged: Radio.

Radio series (1955-1958). NBC-Radio network. NBC staff writers included Ernest Kinroy, George Lefferts and Howard Rodman. 126 30-minute episodes.

Initially a revival of Dimension X (1950-1951), this sf Radio drama anthology series was partnered at first with Astounding and later (from February 1956) with Galaxy, from which magazines the vast majority of stories were drawn, although Kinroy and Lefferts again contributed some original plays. The quality was very high, among the best such offered on US radio. Some adaptations were "A Gun for Dinosaur" (March 1956 Galaxy) by L Sprague de Camp, "The Defenders" (January 1953 Galaxy) by Philip K Dick and "The Tunnel Under the World" (January 1955 Galaxy) by Frederik Pohl. Further authors whose stories were adapted include Nelson S Bond, H L Gold, James E Gunn, Fritz Leiber, Peter Phillips, Clifford D Simak, and a great many others.

In 1973, an effort was made by NBC to revive X Minus One with an adaption of Robert Silverberg's "The Iron Chancellor" (May 1958 Galaxy; rev vt "The Weight Watcher" in Reader's Digest Science Fiction Top-Picks, anth 1977, ed Judith Hatch). This was unsuccessful, although repeats of the original series continued on an irregular basis for some time afterwards as part of a 1970s nostalgia boom for radio drama. All episodes are thought to have survived. [GSt]
