(1940- ) US engineer, entrepreneur and author, who has published under various modifications of his full name, Dr Arlan Keith Andrews, Sr, and who began to release work of genre interest with "Asimov as a Dirty Old Man" in Sandworm for 1971. His sf tends to be strongly grounded in issues of Technology and to make effective use of the devices and espousals of pragmatism characteristic of Hard SF. Beginning with "Glossolalia" in Analog from May 1982, much of his short fiction has appeared in that magazine; the tales assembled in Other Heads and Other Tales: Stories from the Future (coll 2011 ebook) and Future Flash (coll 2016) are representative.
Timelost – Computer Adventure (1983) with Kris Andrews and Joe Giarratano is a Tie to the Videogame Timelost, published in various versions for computer brands then available, each version containing tutorials in how to set up and play the game. The protagonist of Andrews's first novel proper, Valley of the Shaman: A Voyage of Discovery (2012 ebook; rev 2017), must return a prehistoric table to its place of origin, gaining truths along the way as conveyed by a shaman, and learning the secret history of the world (see Secret Masters). Silicon Blood (2017) is set in the Near Future, where the challenges of new technologies (including 3D printing, Nanotechnology, and Virtual Reality) must be met. [JC]
