(1951- ) US author who began to publish work of genre interest with "Siren" in Analog for July 1988, and conducted interviews with Forrest J Ackerman and Mike Resnick for Thrust. The two-volume To Save the Sun sequence comprises To Save the Sun (1992) and To Fear the Light (1994), both written in collaboration with Ben Bova and opening in a fading Galactic Empire. In the first volume the female protagonist is an astrophysicist who conceives and sets into motion a long-term plan to avert the death of our Sun. In the second, wakening after two centuries in Suspended Animation to mastermind this project's completion, she finds that Faster Than Light travel has been achieved, leading to a new wave of Colonization of Other Worlds; there are factional complications including the intrusion of ambiguously motivated Aliens.
Austin should not be confused with the UK fantasy author A J Austin whose first novel appeared in 2017. [DRL]
