(1947- ) UK civil servant (retired 1997) and artist, active in Fandom since 1965 though with occasional periods of silence. He has contributed cartoon artwork to many Fanzines including Ansible, Checkpoint, Maya, Robert Lichtman's Trap Door and Leroy Kettle's True Rat. Several times in the 1970s he was the most popular fan artist in the informal Checkpoint poll, and in 2004 he received the Rotsler Award for life achievement in fanzine art; he has also won multiple FAAn Awards (which see) as artist. A collection of his artwork from 1968 to 2006 was published as Bellissimo! The Harry Bell Art Anthology (graph coll 2006) edited by Rob Jackson (see Maya). In the twenty-first century, though continuing with occasional fanzine contributions, Bell has worked mainly as a fine artist painting distinctive townscapes. [DRL]
