(1971- ) Czech-born lawyer and author, in Canada from around 1980, active from the early 2000s. His first novel, The Ugly (2016) comes close to the literal fantastic in its Satirical recounting of the theft by American lawyers of the homeland of "primitive" "tribe" of Slovaks to benefit wealthy tourists; the protagonist then undergoes a Fantastic Voyage through America in pursuit of justice. Boldizar is of direct sf interest for his second novel, The Man Who Saw Seconds (2024), whose protagonist is ruthlessly exploited for his ESP talent, the capacity to see five seconds into the future (see Precognition); New York, and the manoeuvres necessary there to escape government violations of civility and the law, are vividly rendered. The book received a Locus Award as best sf novel. [JC]
