Abraham, Daniel
Entry updated 13 January 2025. Tagged: Author.
(1969- ) US author who began publishing work of genre interest with "Mixing Rebecca" for The Silver Web, issue 13 1996, and whose first solo novel A Shadow in Summer (2006) – opening The Long Price Quartet – is fantasy, like most of his work. As M L N Hanover he wrote the Black Sun's Daughter sequence of noir Urban Fantasies [see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below] set in Denver, New Orleans, Chicago and other US venues. He collaborated with Gardner Dozois and George R R Martin on the sf Shadow Twin (2004 Scifi.com; 2005 chap; exp vt Hunter's Run 2007), whose human Antihero is forced by Aliens to pursue (with a view to killing) his original self – for he discovers that he is a newly created Clone or Doppelganger. Some of Abraham's fiction has been assembled as Leviathan Wept and Other Stories (coll 2010). The Balfour and Meriwether sequence of novellas, beginning with "Balfour and Meriwether in the Adventure of the Emperor's Vengeance" (in Enemy of the Good, anth 2009, ed Peter Crowther and Nick Gevers; alias Postscripts #19), is Steampunk, set in a Victorian England under heavy stress due to threats from abroad (see Imperialism); one title, Balfour and Meriwether in The Incident of the Harrowmoor Dogs (2013 chap), has been published separately.
With Tyler Corey Franck under the joint pseudonym James S A Corey, he wrote the Expanse sequence beginning with Leviathan Wakes (2011), a Space Opera Tied to the Expanse Role Playing Game, which action is emphasized (see Military SF), within an engagingly baroque frame and climaxing with revelations connected to a Macrostructure in space seemingly constructed from a toolkit – including Stargates that link together more than a thousand inhabitable worlds – bestowed by a Forerunner civilization. The third volume, Abaddon's Gate (2013), won the Locus Award as best sf novel. Cibola Burn (2014) and Nemesis Games (2015) increase the generic topoi under view, and humanize the expanding tale to some degree. The sequence has been adapted for Television as the SyFy series The Expanse (2015-2018), then from Amazon (2019-current). As a novel series, The Expanse won the Hugo for best series in 2020.
In the Captive's War Space Opera sequence beginning with The Mercy of Gods (2024), a half-forgotten colony planet (see Colonization of Other Worlds; Long Night) suffers an exploitative Invasion from an Alien empire, which must be coped with by the proficient biologists (see Biology) who have been solving some of the riddles of interspecies Evolution.
Under the same name, the two have also written a Star Wars tie, Honor Among Thieves (2014). [DRL/JC]
