(1937-    ) US teacher of English, editor and bibliographer who began to publish work of genre interest with the well-received Fantasy reprint Anthology The Fantastic Imagination (anth 1977; vt The Fantastic Imagination: An Anthology of High Fantasy 1977) edited with Kenneth J Zahorski, which besides standalone tales by James Branch Cabell, Lord Dunsany and others includes extracts from novels by C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien. Boyer collaborated with Marshall B Tymn and Zahorski on the important reference work Fantasy Literature: A Core Collection and Reference Guide (1979). Further fantasy anthologies followed, always edited with Zahorski; these include the nonfiction Fantasists on Fantasy (anth 1984), assembling writings by eighteen authors about their worlds and worldbuilding.
