(1956- ) US author best known for the Kay Scarpetta crime series beginning with Postmortem (1990) [not listed below], featuring the cases of a Medical Examiner; by the third decade of the twenty-first century more than twenty-five volumes had been published. Cornwell is of sf interest for the Captain Chase sequence of Near Future crime-oriented Technothrillers beginning with Quantum (2019) featuring an astronaut who is also a competent quantum physicist, and a forensic investigator who focuses on cybercrime. In the first volume, the American government hovers on the edge of terminal breakdown; in the second, Spin (2021), the investigator must control the consequences of a Rocket launch gone wrong, as well as beginning to grasp the Genetic Engineering implications behind her strangely occluded Memories of growing up with her twin sister. Chase soon finds herself upgraded into a Cyborg. [JC]
