US literary review published twice yearly since September 1999, based in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and founded and edited by Batya Weinbaum. It was housed for five years by Cleveland State University, Ohio, but is now run independently with a multi-collegiate editorial board and an Advisory Board that includes Suzy McKee Charnas and Pamela Sargent. It arose because of, according to its website a "perceived lack of attention to SF, fantasy, magic realism and supernatural works in feminist journals and audiences; the lack of consistently evolving developed levels of feminism in SF criticism; and the inadequacy of magical realism publishing outlets in the US." It primarily publishes scholarly articles about Gender issues but also incorporates racial (see Race in SF) and other concerns, with particular reference to the extent to which these are adequately and accurately reflected in Speculative Fiction. There have been a number of themed issues: 2-2 (Spring 2001) concerned Native American women; 4-1 (Fall 2002) explored matters of horror and Vampire fiction; 4-2 (Spring 2003) focused on Jewish women in sf and included a memoir by Pamela Sargent, "Jewish Enough"; 6-1 (Fall 2004) concerned Black women writers and included a transcript of a speech by Nalo Hopkinson; issue 11-2 (2011) is dedicated to the work of Élisabeth Vonarburg. Most issues contain at least one or two stories, sometimes reprints, with work by Marleen S Barr, Suzy McKee Charnas, Samuel R Delany, Tananarive Due, Judith Merril, Dora Russell and Leslie F Stone, amongst others.
