Filmfax
Entry updated 16 September 2024. Tagged: Publication.
Letter-size saddle-stapled Cinema magazine. Printed on newsprint-quality paper until #127 and on glossy paper thereafter. Publisher and editor: Michael Stein. 166 issues, 1986-2024.
One of the best sf and Horror Media Magazines of the later twentieth century, Filmfax has enjoyed a long run due in large part to high-quality content. Coverage has included vintage sf films such as The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), Metropolis (1926) and This Island Earth (1955), plus considerable material on sf Television and Cinema, plus films from other genres. Notables interviewed for the magazine have included Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Kevin McCarthy and Caroline Munro. Like many other print publications, Filmfax encountered distribution problems in the second decade of the new century, and Stein announced in June 2024 that owing to this and to increasing print costs the current issue #166 (June 2024) would be the last.
The similar spinoff magazine Outré ran from 1994 to 2001, but failed to prove a lasting success and eventually merged with its parent. [GSt/DRL]
