(1964-2022) US author who also wrote under the pseudonyms Jessica Freely [used for gay erotic romance, not listed below] and Pearl North, and who began publishing work of genre interest with "Change Is A Dog" in Nova Express for Winter 1991. Her first novel, The Nature of Smoke (1996), is a Near Future tale that fairly effectively weaves together Drugs and apprehensions of chaos as the world becomes increasingly incomprehensible. In Accidental Creatures (1998), which is set in an oppressed Detroit, a batch of Androids is created through corporate Genetic Engineering in order to sidestep a human workforce, causing chaos until a new modus vivendi is achieved with owners (the Satire applied to these figures now seems almost mild). Inventing Memory (2004), a strongly argued Feminist presentation of the matriarchal fundament underlying our present lives, is fantasy. The Young Adult Libyrinth sequence beginning with Libyrinth (2009) as by Pearl North is set in a trifurcated Far Future world, each of the triangulated societies clearly (perhaps over-clearly) demarcated. Gender issues are raised; interpersonal relations are stressed; the value of deep-sunk cultural memories, attained through the retention and use of physical books, is promulgated. [JC]
