(1972-    ) US author, editor and military historian, married to Kerrie L Hughes, who began to publish work of genre interest with "Blood Ghost" in Phantoms of the Night (anth 1996) edited by Richard Gilliam and Martin H Greenberg. He subsequently edited many Anthologies, mostly in collaboration with Greenberg, beginning with Black Cats and Broken Mirrors (anth 1998) with Martin H Greenberg.

Most of Helfers's novels are Ties to various Shared World franchises; the standalone Siege of Night and Fire (2005) is a vigorous military Fantasy. The Vorkosigan Companion (2008) with Lillian Stewart Carl is a nonfiction guide to Lois McMaster Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan universe. Helfers also contributed three novels to the long-running Deathlands sequence of Post-Holocaust Survivalist Fiction, his first being Deathlands #96: Downrigger Drift (2011) as by James Axler (whom see for more).
