Hyper Doll

Entry updated 22 December 2025. Tagged: TV.

Japanese animated OVAs (1995; original title Rakusho! Hyper Doll; vt Hyper Doll: Mew & Mica the Easy Fighters). Triangle Staff. Based on the Manga by Shimpei Itoh. Directed by Makoto Moriwaki. Written by Ryou Motohira. Voice cast include Mayumi Iidzuka, Seizou Katou, Kuujira, Mitsuaki Madono, Hidetoshi Nakamura, Yukana Nogami, Ritsuo Sawa, Yuri Shiratori and Fumihiko Tachiki. Two OVAs of circa 44 minutes; actual stories are circa 28 minutes each, the remainder of the runtime being extras. Colour.

Schoolgirls Mew Fumizuki (Iidzuka) and Mica Minazuki (Nogami) are the aliases of the Hyper Dolls, two Alien Androids tasked with defending the Earth. The only human aware of their secret is classmate Hideo Akai (Madono); Mew and Mica considered killing him because of this, but fortunately their Commander (Sawa) (a slug-like creature whose hologram manifests on food) intervened; so whilst his friends fawn over the pair he regards them as "cold-blooded, emotionless space creatures". The girls have befriended Shouko Aida (Shiratori) who, ironically, seeks to discover the identities of the Hyper Dolls: believing they will murder her should she succeed, Hideo tries to frustrate Shouko's attempts (there is also some romantic tension between the two). At other times he finds he has to persuade Mew and Mica to focus on the current threat, as they lack a strong work ethic.

In the first OVA the Hyper Dolls deal with two Kaiju, Kurageman (Kuujira) and Inagoman (Nakamura) – the first resembling a giant jellyfish, the other a giant grasshopper – sent by Mad Scientist Dr Zaiclit (Katou). In the second OVA Mount Fuji erupts and the doctor observes "it seems that the tardy Ver Wurm has finally appeared" – this being Mimizuman (Tachiki), a giant earthworm wearing an acid-firing collar, originally intended as part of a three-pronged attack by earth, sea and sky with Kurageman and Inagoman, but who is poor at following directions. Despite their initial reluctance – they feel fighting a giant worm is beneath them – Mew and Mica defeat Mimizuman. Dr Zaiclit is not demoralized; rather, "It has become more interesting."

Presumably Hyper Doll was not successful enough to justify further OVAs; the story is left unfinished, a not uncommon fate of Anime series. A pity, as this was a reasonably amusing brace of OVAs (see Humour), a little reminiscent of Dirty Pair, though slighter. There is considerable Fan Service, most notably Mew's and Mica's costumes.
