Ikenberry, Kevin

Entry updated 21 November 2022. Tagged: Author.

(?–) US author, who began to publish work of genre interest with "Illegal" in Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine for May 2012; much of his output has been Military SF, often couched in the form of Alternate Histories. The time-travelling (see Time Travel) protagonist of his first series, The Protocol War sequence beginning with Sleeper Protocol (2015), arrives in a moderately distant Near-Future world while suffering from induced Amnesia and under threat of termination. He must fight to find a role. The series expands into Space Opera territory, with Invasions, Alien civilizations, and Weapons. The Imprint War sequence beginning with Lancer One (2017 ebook) is similar in that here the minds of dead twentieth-century soldiers are transferred futurewards and imprinted (see Identity Transfer) into soldiers about to face challenges; the action has some of the dynamic thrust of Keith Laumer's early work. The Revelations Cycle, which has also been called The Four Horsemen Saga, begins with Peacemaker (2017), a wide-ranging exercise in Military SF with an emphasis, which persists with variations through the long series, on privatized security forces engaged in maintaining peace over the interstellar reaches of a Galactic Union enriched for Homo sapiens by a proliferation of Terraformed planets. The Murphy's Law sequence beginning with Obligations (2020) draws from the same storage facilities of the SF Megatext as Ikenberry's previous series. The Crossing (2022) is set in a Shared World universe created by Eric Flint.

Ikenberry's two singletons are Runs in the Family (2015), whose protagonist longs to leave her Rimworld home, and becomes a mercenary with at least one secret Weapon; the protagonist of Super-Sync (2019) is a civilian operative on a salvage ship en route to an abandoned Space Habitat full of mysteries. It should be noted that women protagonists seem to appear as frequently as males, and behave with similar competence, throughout Ikenberry's work (see Women in SF). [JC]
