(? - ) US physicist with a master's degree from Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tennessee), futurist (see Futures Studies), NASA space technologist and author who began to publish fiction of genre interest with Back to the Moon (2010) with Travis S Taylor, opening the Hard SF Space Excursions sequence continued in On to the Asteroid (2016). Johnson also collaborated with Ben Bova on Rescue Mode (2014), in which a manned mission to Mars suffers meteoroid damage to its Spaceship but cannot turn back; a struggle to complete the journey and survive ensues. Solo novels are Mission to Methone (2018), a tense tale of First Contact beginning with the 2065 discovery of an abandoned alien spacecraft in the Asteroid belt, and The Spacetime War (2021), a venture into Military SF in which human colonies on far worlds (see Colonization of Other Worlds) are systematically attacked and obliterated by superior spacegoing forces, with Earth itself now threatened.
