(1958-2026) US author, journalist and newspaper editor who began to publish work of genre interest with "Loss of Signal" in Galileo for March 1978 and subsequently had stories in Amazing, Analog, Asimov's, F&SF and other venues; he also reviewed for Thrust (later renamed Quantum) 1987-1990. His two novels are Sun Dogs (1981), in which humans and Aliens come to blows over rights over a valuable planet (see Colonization of Other Worlds), and Blank Slate (1984), in which the Uplift-motivated gift by an advanced race of Matter Transmission proves problematic for the human colony planets abandoned decades earlier by Mother Earth.
McGarry edited SFWA Forum 1981-1982 and SFWA Bulletin 1994-1998. [JC]
