(1968- ) Northern Irish author, best known for crime novels, in particular the Sean Duffy sequence beginning with The Cold, Cold Ground (2012), set in Northern Ireland during the Troubles [this series not listed below]. He is of sf interest for his Young Adult Lighthouse Trilogy beginning with The Lighthouse Land (2006), whose teenage protagonist discovers that the Island lighthouse he and his mother have moved into is in fact a Matter Transmission station. He shuttlecocks between this world and a world known as Altair, where his Planetary Romance adventures follow a complicated course. As is not unusual in tales of this sort, which are inherently open to ramification upon ramification, the fate of worlds will eventually depend on young Jamie's actions. [JC]
