(1939-2020) US author who began publishing work of genre interest with "The Iconoclasts" for Fantastic in April 1971, and who has since published some short fiction; his first novel, The Bite of Monsters (1971), an sf tale involving an Alien occupation of Earth, which is successfully resisted. O'Neil's main focus for most of his career comprised tales and Graphic Novels Tied to the DC Comics Superhero, Batman, beginning with Batman: Shaman (1989-1990 DC Comics as "Legends of the Dark Knight"; graph 1993) with John Beatty and Edward Hannigan, and climaxing with the Batman film ties Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008). Batman Unauthorized: Vigilantes, Jokers and Heroes in Gotham City (anth 2008) is a nonfiction miscellany. For Marvel Comics, O'Neil was the credited editor for most issues of Marvel Preview (1975-1983, latterly Bizarre Adventures) and also scripted such titles as The Amazing Spider-Man (1980-1981), Iron Man (1982-1986) and Daredevil (1983-1985).
