(1953- ) US artist and editor active in Fanzines, Semiprozines, Convention publications and underground Comics since the early 1970s; he has contributed artwork to Algol, Ansible, FAPA, Heavy Metal, Janus/Aurora, Locus, Thrust, Trap Door (see Robert Lichtman) and many others. With Stephen P Brown he founded Science Fiction Eye in 1987 and co-edited the first five issues, after which Brown continued as sole editor. Fanzines by Steffan include Boonfark (8 issues plus supplements 1974-1983), the small and informal Pong (40 issues 1980-1992) and the ambitious Blat! (4 issues plus supplements 1993-1994), the last two co-edited with Ted White.
Steffan's strong-lined artwork covers a wide range from highly formal to comically surreal designs; he is adept at grotesque visual Humour. A selection was published as Lard and Other Renderings (graph 1995 chap). He did some work for DC Comics in the 1990s and has produced several book covers. In 2009 he received the Rotsler Award for life achievement in fanzine art. [DRL]
