(? - ) US editor and occasional author whose first edited publication was the Doctor Who-related Queers Dig Time Lords (anth 2013) with Sigrid Ellis, shortly followed by Flying Higher: An Anthology of Superhero Poetry (anth 2013) with Shira Lipkin, in which he published his first work of genre interest, "Hawkguy". He is best known as the founding editor-in-chief in 2014 of Uncanny Magazine (which see), jointly with his wife Lynne M Thomas. They shared eight Hugo awards for Uncanny as best Semiprozine in the years 2016-2020 inclusive, 2022, 2023 and 2025, plus a ninth – again shared – as best professional editor (short form) in 2018; the magazine also received a 2024 World Fantasy Award in the special award (non-professional) category. Lynne M Thomas stepped down as joint editor in 2025 and they were amicably divorced in April 2026, leaving him as sole owner and publisher. The magazine continues. From 2025 Michael Damian Thomas has conducted a number of interviews with contemporary authors for the associated Uncanny Podcast.
Both the Thomases co-edited a useful selection of work from Uncanny, released as The Best of Uncanny (anth 2019). [DRL]
