(1951- ) UK author whose sf novel, Correspondence (1992), is a complexly crafted presentation of a range of interweaving material, with regard to which a number of correspondences can be contemplated. The protagonist, having been transformed into a Cyborg, has developed software which allows her interact directly with her audience in the telling of her fantasies; within the frame of this Virtual Reality interface, created characters live out lives that are directly correspondent to their creator's. Correspondences between machine and human intelligence are also brought into play (see AI); and discussed in a Postmodernist idiom. Water (1994) conveys a complex Feminist sense of structural dysfunction centred on a bad family and permeated by incursions of almost animate water, in which a father is drowned and a lover crafts itself/himself out of the sea.
