(1962-    ) UK playwright, author and editor. While at university in the early 1980s he, along with fellow-student Rob Meades, defined and named the Drabble – a 100-word Flash Fiction story format. One hundred drabbles, many donated by sf authors including Isaac Asimov and Terry Pratchett, were collected as The Drabble Project (anth 1988) edited as David B Wake with Meades, and published as a charity fundraiser. Two further volumes followed [see Checklist below]. As a novelist Wake started with the grim fairy tale The Other Christmas Carol (2010) and the wryly humorous I, Phone (2013) before embarking on two series, the steampunk The Derring-Do Club and the dystopian crime thriller Thinkersphere. Both series continue, as does his work as a usually non-genre playwright. [RR]
