(1951- ) US author, married until 1990 to Diana G Gallagher, who began publishing work of genre interest with "By the Flicker of the One-Eyed Flame" for Andromeda 2 (anth 1977) edited by Peter Weston, and who has produced considerable work in various genres, receiving nominations for various awards; several tales make use of his own Chinese-US background. The protagonist of Hong on the Range (1989) had appeared earlier in "Hong's Bluff" (March 1985 Omni). The Shade of Lo Man Gong (Winter 1988 Pulphouse; 1991 chap) is also fantasy, as are the deft stories assembled in Wong's Lost and Found Emporium and Other Oddities (coll 1992). His novels are less impressive. The first, Masterplay (fixup 1987), though not set in a franchised Game-World, flirts with the intoxications of a role-playing venue whose outcomes determine real events. His other books have been Ties, including two tales in the Isaac Asimov's Robot City sequence, Isaac Asimov's Robot City #3: Cyborg (1987) and Isaac Asimov's Robot City #6: Perihelion * (1988), and the entire Isaac Asimov's Robots in Time sequence, beginning with Isaac Asimov's Robots in Time #1: Predator and ending with Isaac Asimov's Robots in Time #6: Invader (1994). Isaac Asimov's three Laws of Robotics are modestly adhered to. Among his other ties Robert Silverberg's Time Tours #1: The Robin Hood Ambush (1990) may stand out (for remaining ties see Checklist below).
The Yellow Peril: Chinese Americans in American Fiction, 1850-1940 (1982), which renders into reader-usable form his PhD thesis, is an extended and judicious nonfiction survey of American Yellow Peril literature. [JC]
