Chadwick, Paul
Entry updated 15 December 2025. Tagged: Author.
(1902-1972) US Pulp author who began to publish work of genre interest with "Crusaders of Space" in Amazing Stories Quarterly for Fall/Winter 1932. He is best known for his creation of the character Secret Agent "X" in the short lead novel "The Torture Trust" in Secret Agent "X" for February 1934 under the pseudonym Brant House, which became a magazine House Name also used by others. Only the 1966 reissues of selected stories in book form are listed below.
Chadwick also created the character Captain Hazzard in "Python Men of Lost City" as by Chester Hawks in Captain Hazzard for May 1938, the first and last issue of that magazine. Hazzard was based on Doc Savage, with the ostentatious difference that he was blind and had thus developed remarkable mental powers to overcome this minor difficulty. This short novel, the lead story in the magazine, had a facsimile reissue by Robert Weinberg as Pulp Classics #2: Captain Hazzard (1974 chap). For revivals of the character by Ron Fortier that co-credit Chester Hawks, see Checklist below.
After World War Two, Chadwick moved into Western pulps and later into newspaper journalism. [DRL]
