Dietz, William C

(1945- ) US author who began to publish sf with War World (1986; vt Galactic Bounty 1997), the first volume of his Sam McCade sequence of sf adventures about an interstellar bounty hunter, which continued with Imperial Bounty (1988) and two further titles. The galactic venue of the series exhibits some interesting kinks, and McCade himself gradually gains individuality. Although the angle of approach differs – the protagonist this time is an interstellar con man – the Lando sequence, beginning with Drifter (1991), comprises an essentially similar take on the Space Opera adventure tale, a form in which Dietz is never less than efficient; the Legion of the Damned sequence, beginning with Legion of the Damned (1993), is Military SF; The Corvan Duology – Matrix Man (1990) and Mars Prime (1992) – is a complicated, fast-moving sequence set in a Near-Future Earth whose seas and population are continuing to rise, and where a nefarious peace foundation (run in fact by a huge corporation) opposes attempts by the Exodus Society to foment emigration to Mars, where colonists discover an Alien Spaceship; The Sauron Duology – DeathDay (2001) and EarthRise (2002) – is, as befits its closer proximity to the home planet, which suffers an Alien Invasion, comparatively dark in hue; The Runner Duology/Jan Rebo sequence – Runner (2005) and Logos Run (2006) – is set in the Far Future. Singletons include Freehold (1987), military sf; Prison Planet (1989), set on a Prison planet; Cluster Command (1989) with David A Drake, – one of the latter's Crisis of Empire sequence; and Bodyguard (1994). As an author of entertainments, Dietz stands out for his thorough grasp of the devices of sf. [JC]
