Online Magazine from Brazil, whose twelve-strong editorial team published four bilingual issues between 2020 and 2023. The title refers to an interjection that can convey everything from surprise and joy to pity and dismay.
Intended as a vehicle for delivering the latest in Brazilian Portuguese Speculative Fiction to the Anglophone world, Eita! featured many up-and-coming authors, such as Thiago Ambrósio Lage and Luísa Montenegro, as well as classic texts by Lima Barreto, Aluísio de Azevedo, Machado de Assis and Thomaz Lopes. An important node in the constellation of SF in Translation in the twenty-first century, Eita! included stories about ghosts (see Supernatural Creatures), Aliens – friendly and otherwise – conscious Cities and trees, curupira (a mythological forest creature), and mysterious beings who lure children into their lairs. Brazilian Portuguese sf in translation began in 1972 with André Carneiro's story "Darkness" (1963; trans in Nova 2, anth 1972, ed Harry Harrison) and has continued since then, with the first translated anthology being Solarpunk: histórias ecológicas e fantásticas em um mundo sustentáv! (anth 2013; trans Fabio Fernandes as Solarpunk: Ecological And Fantastical Stories in a Sustainable World 2018) edited by Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro (see also Solarpunk). Eita!, though, was the only other attempt so far to bring more Brazilian Portuguese sf into English. In 2023, the editors of Eita! announced that the magazine was going on hiatus in order to reorganize and come back stronger. As of this writing, however, it has not resumed publication. [RSCo]
